Oklahoma is doomed.

March 11, 2008

The Oklahoma House of Representatives has passed a bill that says that a student can receive a passing grade in an Earth Science class if they say that the Flying Spaghetti Monster created the Earth an hour ago, and then planted false memories into every single living creature on Earth to make it seem like they’ve been around longer.

I honestly thought this was a fucking joke when I first read it.

Teacher > “Hey Bobby you got question 9 wrong on the test…earth is around 4 billion years old not 6000 years.”

Bobby > “Oh but I believe in magic and Jesus…”

Teacher > “You get an A+ Bobby! Great job!”

I’ve always wondered why some fundamentalist Christians think they have to believe the earth is 6,000 years old. (Probably the same ones who think they have to be conservative Republicans). The Bible, in fact, gives no time frame for when the earth was formed. So why is it such a debated topic? No one knows how old the Earth is. The Bible doesn’t say, scientists do their best and seem to increase their estimates by billions every year, and it seems both sides make leaps in logic along the way.
Science doesn’t refute the Bible or Christianity. The scientific process is a completely different thing that faith/religion. The two are different animals; they’re not contradictory ideas fighting against each other; they’re completely different things, but one doesn’t disprove the other. It seems many fundamentalists fear science. But knowledge is never bad. If someone can prove to me that there is no God and he didn’t create the universe, like on the Simpsons when Homer gets the crayon removed from his brain and figured out a formula that proves there is no God, awesome. But no one can prove that; just like no one can prove there is a God. No one was around at the origin of the universe and there are so many unanswered questions about that. Trying to figure it out is important; that’s what everyone, scientists and people of all religions, are trying to do, and they should just live and let live: The little brats should learn all the scientific information; if learning new information makes them lose their beliefs, how founded were the beliefs to begin with?
P.S., Bish, why isn’t kiowakartel.com on your blogroll?

Willow! You so said some things that made my hair fall out…but it cool.

The Bible does say how old the earth is. You just have to look harder and know Hebrew and look @ an original bible. This link http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/faq-age-of-earth.html here has all the info you should need about both side and how they get their numbers, some scientific answers some theologistic(sp?) answers. Scientist do know how old earth is. The fact that we know a rock is 3.5 billion years old states that earth MUST be that old at minimum. The numbers do change as we find more evidence and/or improve current dating methods, but the numbers do NOT change by the billions…that’s just ridiculous. Both sides do not make leaps in logic, unless by “leap in logic” you mean empirical scientific data, then yes ONE side makes a leap in logic. Religion just leaps around in the field of irrationality.

You are totally correct when you said that the scientific process is completely different then faith/religion as the faithful process doesn’t even exist. Though you are totally incorrect when you say that they are not contradictory ideas. Both science and religion make grand claims about the universe, how it works, and how we, as humans, should live our lives. BOTH sides have answers that differ drastically. If that is not contradicting each other I don’t know what would fit your definition. As for “one does not disprove the other”….well of course? Any evidence that would disprove God or any of God’s “doings” wouldn’t be sufficient enough for the ever faithful. We know this already. There have been countless tests done on prayer to see if it really works. Every single time those who prayed got what they wanted just as often as those who did not pray. The religious fanatics would say, “God knew you were doing the test so he changed the outcome.” The fact that we can still see the light and the background radiation of the universe from the big bang/crunch says the universe MUST MUST MUST be 14ish billion years old. That right there should be enough for young earth believers to stop believing…but no, they retort with, “when god created that light it was already on its way here.” No matter what science can do or say to disprove or to reject God(s) it will never work as the religious will pull out their “Goddidit” card. Also just because you cant disprove something doesn’t make it make more sense and or real. You cannot without a doubt disprove that 7 pink invisible unicorns follow me wherever I go and tell me the secrets of the universe. Now if I use religious logic then I have every right to believe in these unicorns and you should respect what I believe. As soon as you replace the word God with flying spaghetti monster or pink unicorns all of the sudden you realize how ridiculous a statement “you can’t disprove it” is.

Indeed no one was around at the beginning of the universe and we have no idea how some things work. This is 100% correct. But the religious seem to think they have ALL the answers in a book written 2000 years ago by people who we don’t know and has been translated over and over and over again. Science has theories obviously i.e. the big bang, big crunch, evolution, gravity etc etc tec. Though science has evidence to support it but they will never say, “this is 100% true.” Most scientist believe the big bang is the cause of the universe but we are not entirely too sure. So instead of saying GOD CREATED THE EART AND THE UNIVERSE AND THAT IS FACT! DONT FUCK WITH IT! Scientist say, “ok we have all this evidence and different theories that seem to hold true to mulitple predictions and test; most likely this/these is/are true.

No scientist in their right mind would say the big bang happened 100% , we DONT KNOW, and that’s just that. Science admits they do not know and want to figure it out. Religion already has the answers and you better not fucking question them. Any scientist that receives information or evidence that would disprove a theory is the happiest man on earth. He accepts it, moves on, and continues his work. When the faithful are presented evidence that contradicts their answers, well…they throw them out or say “goddidit.” Scientist wants the answers and wants to find them. Religion isn’t looking for a single answer as they have them all in their trusty moral handbook.

I don’t know why KK isn’t on my blogroll, I’ll add it now.

Now my hair is falling out too.
But I didn’t think I said anything controversial….don’t want a blog-ument. (I just made that word up! I like it.) I just try to keep an open mind and still make intelligent decisions and form my beliefs and values based on as much wisdom I can get my hands on. I just know a lot of atheists who are just as narrow-minded as many religious people.
Oh and the Bible doesn’t say how old the Earth is. But this is your blog so you get the last word!
Or we could have a squirt gun war. between High Street and Kiowa. but i’d rather work toward getting the two roads turned into one.

  4. Bishop Says:

    I quote

“Young Earth creationists typically derive their range of figures using the ages given in the genealogies and other dates in the Bible, similar to the process used by James Ussher (1581–1656), Church of Ireland Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland, when he dated creation at 4004 BC. Ussher’s chronology, published in 1650, has been subsequently revised many times, most recently in 2003 by Larry and Marion Pierce.[22]”

It IS in the bible…but not really…

The only reason I said you made my hair fall out was due to several statements that could have been researched within 10-15 mins.

I’ve always wondered why some fundamentalist Christians think they have to believe the earth is 6,000 years old

they’re not contradictory ideas fighting against each other

Big difference from an opinion and getting facts wrong. . Arguing is not in my vocabulary; the word was replaced with talking. Think about how retarded this world would be if we dropped every discussion that was controversial.

Though I don’t really know denver at all god. It will be hard to find you. So killing you would be hard. Plus you’re like a God and shit. But when I do find you…

First thing…I will kill myself. And when my tainted spirit finds it’s destination, I will topple the master of that dark place. From my black throne, I will lash together a machine of bone and blood, and fuled by my hatred for YOU this fear engine will bore a whole between this world and that one. When it begins you will hear the sound of children screaming – as though from a great distance. A smoking orb of NOTHING will grow above your bed, and from it emerge a thousand starving crows. As I slip through the widening maw in my new form, you will catch only a glimpse of my radiance before you are incinerated. Then as tears of bubbling black pitch stream down my face, my dark work will begin.

I will open one of my six mouths, and I will sing the song that ends the Earth.

    Have a nice day ^_~!

O and thanks penny arcade for the hilarious quote above.
