Breastfed children are brainier, study suggests
Researchers monitored 14,000 children in Belarus
Findings based on IQ and academic ratings at age six
Breastfed babies are more intelligent than those weaned on formula milk, according to the most comprehensive study conducted on the issue.
Doctors followed nearly 14,000 children over six and a half years and found that those who were breastfed fared significantly better in IQ tests.
At the age of six and a half, children who had been exclusively breastfed scored 7.5 points higher in verbal intelligence tests and 5.9 points higher in overall IQ tests. Teachers also rated the breastfed children higher at reading, writing and solving mathematical problems.
The finding, which confirms earlier research, raises the question of whether it is breast milk itself or associated maternal care that is responsible for boosting the intelligence of developing babies. Previous studies have hinted that breastfeeding increases intelligence, but the effect has proved hard to nail down.
One problem is that in nearly every study so far the mothers involved have chosen beforehand whether or not they plan to breastfeed. It meant doctors could not rule out the possibility that breastfeeding women were simply brighter, or were likely to interact more with their children. In the latest study, researchers led by Michael Kramer, a professor of paediatrics at McGill University in Montreal, studied children born at 31 maternity hospitals across Belarus between 1996 and 1997. They got around the problems faced by earlier studies by randomly assigning half of the hospitals to adopt a breastfeeding promotion programme, while the rest acted as a control group and continued to offer their usual post-natal advice.
Between 2002-05 the doctors interviewed 13,889 of the children and their mothers, around half of whom had attended clinics promoting breastfeeding. Of mothers who visited clinics that advocated breastfeeding, 43% fed their babies only on breast milk until the age of three months, compared with 6.4% of women at the control clinics.
“Our study provides the strongest evidence to date that prolonged and exclusive breastfeeding makes kids smarter,” said Kramer, whose research appears in the Archives of General Psychiatry.
Figures last year from the UK Infant Feeding Survey revealed 76% of women started breastfeeding their babies, but less than half continued to breastfeed their babies beyond six weeks.
The researchers’ study fails to answer the question of what it is about breastfeeding that boosts intelligence. “It remains unclear whether the observed cognitive benefits of breastfeeding are due to some constituent of breast milk, or are related to the physical and social interactions inherent in breastfeeding,” Kramer writes.
Breast milk is known to contain essential long-chain fatty acids and a chemical called insulin-like growth factor, which alone might be responsible for boosting intelligence.

Well first off. Is this game NOT an online game? Im sure I read somewhere, your world, your universe, your game… is derived from other users creations…
So complaining about having to have online capabilities to install and play an online game…well that’s just fucking ridiculous. Though I’m not entirely sure about the “only online” aspect of it, or if there will also be a single player version…but then again…how is your universe populated w/ out other players? Randomly by the computer? That seems to undermine and defeat the premise of the entire game.
FYI - every game I play now, requires me to be online…to install, update, and play it. Also games like counter-strike and TF2, or any other steam games, are always getting cd keys checked…this has yet to pose any problems for me. If anything it will help track who has bought the game, who is stil playing the game, and how many people pirate the game for future changes and ideas.
People getting mad at a company trying not to get their software stolen…is the second most absurd thing i’ve ever heard of, right below having to be online to play an online game.
Lets look at the logic…
Person A steals from Company B
Person A shares to world how easy it is to steal from Company B
Company B impletements new ideas and software to thwart stealing
Person A gets mad…
Person A needs to shut the fuck up, becasue he is STEALING STUFF.
Don’t get me wrong, I love pirates and I may or may not pirate 95% of all my music, movies, and software…but it doesn’t mean im allowed to get mad when someone tries to stop me.
In repsonse to the argument/issue of , “People will figure out other ways to pirate the games — that’s almost guaranteed. So, in the end, all this will really do is piss off the legitimate customers who paid for something that suddenly doesn’t work, though no fault of their own.”
If pirates didn’t pirate…then they wouldn’t have to impletent these security measures, so arn’t pirate the initial causality for these “normal people” getting fucked…if not…then we can also throw the above arguement away also.
I don’t even understand this part of the argument, “legitimate customers who paid for something that suddenly doesn’t work, though no fault of their own”
Something that suddenly doesn’t work, though no fault of their own? What does that even mean…what would SUDDENLY stop working? Your internet? Ok get your internet fixed…other than that, I don’t know what this last sentence really means.
“suddenly doesn’t work” implies that something unknown/unpredicted happened to stop the game from working…in these 3 paragraphs they already told us what would make the game work and wouldn’t make it work…so if a game stops working..umm…USER ERROR?
THEY DONT WANT TO LOSE MONEY…the end. You can’t blame someone for not trying to lose money. They may or may not being going at this the right way.
The only REAL problem I see with what they are doing is making the game installable 3 times. Which is retarded. You might as well say, “Your computer is only allowed to break 3 times, then you need to re-buy your software”
Then again, you can most likely install the game to an EXT HD and just move the folders to your internal.
Basically, this isn’t final, things can change….the game is NOT out yet…and when it does come out it can still change through patches and fixes.
Everyone should C A L M D O W N and let a compnay spend its money and resources the way it wants to. If they fail miserably, someone else will roll with the same idea and make a better game.

ok.. first off.. i dont want to have buy a fucking game, and then pay 60 bucks a month just to play the game. what if i decide to bring the game on vacation with me. now i cant play the game after 5 days. or what if i cant afford internet for a month. now my SINGLE PLAYER games dont work. thats retarded. i see your point on piracy. but these are not games you have to online to play, this isnt TF2, this is spore. the game where going online is voluntary. where you go and get creatures, but most of them are cpu generated. this is bull shit.
what happens when ea decides to shut down the server that checks your registration. your game dies? the same thing that happened to everyone that bought music through microsoft. they just threw the money away?
i could understand this on an only multiplayer game. but this is a single player game.
this isnt to check once when you install. or play online, or get a patch.
this is every 5 days you own the game.

Henrie Satisfactory:
This is the latest on spore nig.
Despite some hand-wringing by fans, EA today announced that their hugely anticipated Will Wright game Spore will not make use of SecuROM’s 10-day periodic re-authetication and instead use a modified version to require online authentication.
The announcement comes on the heels of news that Mass Effect will also be ditching the ten day re-authentication.
“We wanted to let you know that we’ve been hearing your concerns about the online authentication mentioned earlier this week. I didn’t want to head into the weekend without getting back to you with some information about how Spore is planning on using this new system.
A few things we wanted you to know:
— We authenticate your game online when you install and launch it the first time.
— We’ll re-authenticate when a player uses online features, downloads new content or a patch for their game.
— The new system means you don’t have to play with the disc in your computer. And if you are like me, always losing discs, this will be a huge benefit.
— You’ll still be able to install and play on multiple computers.
— You can play offline.
We do hope that players will play online - sharing creatures, buildings and vehicles with other players is something that is unique to Spore and one of the coolest features of the game. Every day, when I play the Creature Stage, I get to see wacky and awesome new creatures from my Buddies on the team coming over the hill at me and I can’t wait to see what happens when our creative, passionate community starts sharing their creations.
Happy? Woot!
